In light of the escalation of airstrikes during the weekend, I want to express my deep concern at this critical and dangerous moment for the region and the world. Stability in the Middle East is essential -not only for the region itself but for global security.
Above all, we must remember that innocent civilians and children always bear the greatest cost of conflict. I am particularly concerned about the ongoing crisis in Gaza and the potential for Israel’s actions against Iran to distract from their atrocities in Gaza.
Reports that a ceasefire agreement, which many hoped would offer a path toward de-escalation, has already been broken only deepens the sense of urgency. If diplomacy is to have any chance, agreements must be honoured and built upon, not discarded.
We must continue to apply consistent and principled pressure on Israel to ensure international law is upheld and the rights and safety of civilians are protected in Gaza.
Any further escalation in the region would be a grave threat to peace and is in no one’s interest. Violence often only breeds more violence; it dehumanises us all. I urge all parties to show restraint, step back from the brink, and commit to diplomacy over conflict.
My thoughts are with all those affected, including those in our community who are worried for loved ones in the region. As someone with close family in service, I understand the fear that global tensions like these bring -especially for constituents across Weston-super-Mare, Worle and our villages who have friends and family in the Armed Forces.
My team and I are in close contact with other MPs, officials and Government ministers to stay informed of the latest developments. If you are concerned about someone currently overseas or serving in the military, please don’t hesitate to contact my office -we are here to help.
