Vote to Decriminalise Abortion

I voted in Parliament to decriminalise abortion in the UK. This change will modernise abortion legislation, enshrining a woman’s right to access safe and legal abortions whilst also keeping important safeguards in place.

I am pleased to say that after extensive debate, this vote passed in the House of Commons.

I appreciate the deep conviction that underpins people’s views on this matter. I would like to thank each constituent who has contacted me to share their perspective. Your point of view matters to me immensely – and I have not taken it for granted.

Fundamental to my vote was the principle of protecting women’s bodily autonomy and their right to choose.

It is important to note that these reforms do not change the 24 week limit for abortion, or the legal responsibilities of doctors. It does, however, prevent the criminalisation of women accessing healthcare – and that is why it received my support.
