I share the deep concerns of many constituents about the ongoing and escalating crisis in Gaza. It is beyond heartbreaking to witness the continued loss of innocent lives, especially children, and the destruction of homes, hospitals, and vital civilian infrastructure. No one should have to endure such suffering.
The actions taken by the Israeli Government in Gaza are horrific. The level of human suffering is unbearable, and the restriction of food and aid into the region is a shocking display of disregard for human life and basic rights. The international community must consider every possible avenue to bring an end to the violence, including action from our own government. Resolving this conflict is essential to safeguard the lives of innocent civilians in both Israel and Palestine, not just for the present but to build a sustainable future where both can thrive.
While I know my ability to influence the Israeli authorities is limited, I have been working behind the scenes to raise my concerns through UK Government and international channels, I have raised these concerns directly with the Minister for the Middle East, Hamish Falconer MP on many occasions and, as part of the UK parliamentary delegation to the Council of Europe I was part of the delegation that pushed for the motion calling for the Suspension of Israel’s Observer Status at the Council.
I have joined over 70 Labour MPs and Peers in signing a letter urging the UK Government to recognise the State of Palestine. This is not only a necessary political act, it is a critical step toward achieving a just and lasting peace.
I remain deeply concerned by the growing violence in the West Bank. Israeli settlements are illegal under international law and remain a significant barrier to peace. Neither I nor the UK Government recognise the Occupied Palestinian Territories as part of Israel.
I have also written to Minister Falconer to seek clarity on the Government’s stance regarding arms sales. Like many colleagues, I believe that any exports which could be used in the conflict must be suspended. The UK must remain fully compliant with both its legal responsibilities and moral obligations under international law.
Adding my voice again to the many in my constituency, across the UK and the world, I am calling for:
- An immediate and enduring ceasefire
- A comprehensive prohibition on arms sales to Israel
- Sanctions against those inciting violence, including members of the Israeli Government
- Rapid and substantial humanitarian aid for Gaza
- A halt to settlement expansion and violence in the West Bank
- Referral to the International Criminal Court for allegations of war crimes, including those involving aid workers
- Unconditional release of all hostages
- Prompt recognition of Palestine
- Pursuit of a two-state solution accompanied by new political leadership in both regions
I will continue to advocate for a diplomatic solution that ensures peace, security, and justice for both Israelis and Palestinians, and for a future where Gaza’s territory and population are protected, not diminished or displaced.
