Proud of weston, tired of rubbish

Weston-super-Mare has charm, character, and potential. Our coastline, variety of events, and welcoming atmosphere make our town an ideal location for so many. But we are facing challenges with the amount of litter in the town. Rubbish in our parks, streets, and seafront. It affects our lives, how holidaymakers see our town, and how we feel about our home.

This campaign has launched to fix that. This is more than a clean-up. It is a long-term effort to protect our town, strengthen tourism, and show everyone who visits that we take pride in our home.

A clean town does more than look good. It boosts supports businesses, encourages visitors to return, and helps put Weston back on the map as a top seaside destination. Holiday makers who enjoy a clean environment are more likely to spend time and money in local shops, cafes, and attractions. Tourism is a huge part of our economy, and tidying our town is an investment in our future.

A campaign led by Action

I am leading this campaign with support our local litter picking organisations, including Sophie’s Litter Pickers, Locking Womblers, Cleaner Coastlines and Weston Malays.

These community efforts have shown what can be achieved when people come together, and this campaign will take that spirit across the whole town.

This is where you come in!

We need you to report litter hotspots where rubbish builds up, including parts of the beach, parks, pavements, and town centre paths. Posters with QR codes have been put up across Weston in beaches, libraries, and bus stops, allowing residents to report areas that need sorting! Reports go straight to my team, who will coordinate clean-ups with schools, youth groups, volunteers, and businesses. If you would also like to volunteer, please fill out this form and I can keep you informed with litter picking dates.

A key part of this campaign is inspiring pride in the next generation. Schools, Scout groups, and the Weston-super-Mare Sea Cadets will be invited to take part in litter picks at marked hotspots. People will work in teams, take ownership of areas, and see the visible impact of their efforts.

A cleaner town lifts community spirit, supports tourism, and creates a welcoming place for residents and visitors alike. Litter harms wildlife, pollutes the sea, and makes Weston less welcoming. Every piece of rubbish removed is a step toward a Weston that looks and feels cared for.

I’m starting with community action here in Weston, but I’ll also be raising this directly with the Government and relevant Ministers, tackling the issue on both fronts: local and national. Change has to happen on the ground, but also in policy.

It’s important to fill out the form, firstly so it can be cleared, but secondly so we can build a better understanding of where rubbish builds up so we can try and stop it from appearing there.
